Public bug reported:

I noticed for last 2-3 days there are no sound and LED notifications for
a new SMS, but in the indicator menu the envelope icon turns green and
the new SMS is listed as usual. Things are working alright for Telegram,
Gmail etc. (sound+LED+indicator menu).

Device: bq Aquaris E5 HD, Ubuntu 15.04 (OTA-9)

** Affects: indicator-messages (Ubuntu)

On Meizu MX4 with OTA-9 installed, I have the green envelope OK, the
vibration notification also works but there is no sound. Tried the
following sounds; Amsterdam (Default), Mallet and Positive - all have
the same outcome - no sound produced on a new SMS.

When you are in this state please check if other audio plays, like with
the music app. If not this is probably bug #1542947 and a reboot should
fix it.

On my MX4, then this is a permanent issue, that is, a reboot or forced-
reboot (power button held for 10 seconds) does not clear it - opening
Music and playing tracks, incoming calls and going into System Settings
| Sound and selecting different sounds (Amsterdam, Positive, etc) all
cause playing of the tune (with the stop icon at the bottom of the
screen when in the System Settings | Sound screen).

It's just that when you leave the phone and an SMS comes in, it just
vibrates and doesn't give any sound - it gives sound and vibration when
a call comes in still.

Thanks Pat McGowan (pat-mcgowan), other sounds (incoming call, music player, youtube on browser, notification from telegram, gmail etc.) were playing fine except the incoming SMS notification. Then I restarted the device and now sound notification for incoming SMS works again!
But I found something a bit abnormal. During these sound alerts (I tried SMS and Telegram for now), a very mild crackling noise is heard for a second (or a fraction of a second) before and after the actual alert tune. Something like Bug #1479758 . I don't remember hearing this noise previously.

The volume for notifications is currently separate from the ringtone
(default) setting. I suspect yours is at the lowest setting. Try
turning up the volume as soon as an incoming notification is on screen.
And yes this is rather tricky to do and we will modify this behavior in
the future

Alternately from the command line you can remove all the current settings and go back to defaults:
rm /home/phablet/.config/pulse/ubuntu-phablet-stream-volumes.tdb
and restart the phone.

Actually my comment previously is not correct, the alerts seems to be
following the multimedia volume level used for music playback so at
this point I am not sure why you have no audio for text messages.

Please attach the pulse config file from the previous comment to the
bug.

As I mentioned in comment #4 sound alert for new SMS is working again
after reboot. Nevertheless I deleted (from file browser, not using
terminal) the ubuntu-phablet-stream-volumes.tdb file and rebooted as
suggested in comment #5. Sound alert for text, call, Telegram - all
working fine now. The new ubuntu-phablet-stream-volumes.tdb file is
attached herewith.

ah, just deleted the ubuntu-phablet-stream-volumes.tdb file and rebooted
the mx4 - sound is back - great, thanks for the suggestion.

Volume (in System Settings | Sound) never made a difference when I tried
to adjust before.

thx again.

I believe that it is inconsistent (more than just putting into silent and back out).
I had my MX4 in silent on Friday evening then back to normal
Saturday seemed OK
Sunday morning I thought the SMS sound notification wasn't working (vibration still good) - I had to hard reset my phone 2-3 times to get bluetooth working again to my headset and phone app crashed as locked up the screen (bluetooth kept connecting but no voice transferred, then after 2-3 hard resets (power button for 10 secs) all came good again).
Sunday evening SMS notifications all ok for multiple texts from multiple people, sent various SMS's and a single MMS, again OK
received SMS after this, sound still good
Something happened (unknown what though)
now sound failed again on SMS...

Would you like a copy of the ubuntu-phablet-stream-volumes.tdb file
again or anything else I can provide to assist?

I'm still not sure whether it is a consistent way to reproduce or not,
but I believe this issue comes back every time after switching back to
normal mode from "Silent Mode".

OK, thx, I also raised a question
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-
settings/+question/285197 (but may have posted into the wrong place)
asking if there's any apps or methods of changing the volumes
independently as on Android as I hadn't found anything when searching
the web, however there were no suggestions given.

Wonder if you could share some light - at present if this happens again
is the only way forwards to delete the file again. As with any issue, it
isn't a solution but a usable workaround currently.

Anupam: I don't see anything wrong from the media-hub.log, at least with
this portion of the media stack. I'm thinking it may be an issue with
pulseaudio but this bug will require deeper investigation to really know
for sure. Anupam, which of the .ogg files listed in your media-hub.log
do you currently have set for playing for SMS notifications?

Geoff: Can you please attach your media-hub.log file right after this
occurs for you as well? I'd like to double check.

Hello Jim. the log file I attached before was from the time when every
sound notification was working fine right after a reboot. But I'm seeing
this issue every now and then. Usually deleting ubuntu-phablet-stream-
volumes.tdb file, rebooting device for once (sometimes twice) etc. make
things normal again. I'll try to get the log file when there's no SMS
sound next time.

Meanwhile, I'm not sure whether it's a mere coincidence or the causality, but I noticed the issue after these steps for the last 2-3 times:
1. Toggle the "Silent Mode" on from the indicator menu
2. Keep the device in "Silent Mode" for 2-3 hours
3. Deactivate "Silent Mode" from the indicator menu

I mostly use Mallet.ogg files as SMS tone, sometimes switch to
Positive.ogg

here's a zip of the media hub files before and after it going wrong (I'm
assuming that this is what the .gz files are). I don't recall changing
the volume or silent status until after it went wrong yesterday apart
from on Friday evening when it was on silent for around 1-2 hours.
Media-hub-7.gz should show when it was in silent mode (Friday evening).
Hope this info is useful - if not and you need something else please
holla.

I did change the sounds from the default to positive the other week as I
thought I was missing text messages due to not hearing them - then I did
the tests and found it was due to only the vibration working - before it
was left on the Amsterdam default.

Here's the media-hub.log file when there's no sound alert for new SMS.
Sound alert for new Telegram message is working fine. Also I wanted to
mention another fact in case it turns out helpful. Even when the sound
alert is working for SMSs, new Telegram message alert is significantly
louder than new SMS alert although both play the same tone (chosen in
System Settings > Sound > Message received).

Toggling between Silent Mode and normal mode from the indicator menu is
NOT reproducing the issue consistently as I said in comment #16 and #19

I noticed this bug for a while now, SMS sounds get muted for no apparent
reason (while other sounds work) and they arent back unless I reboot the
phone. This persists for a long time now, so far after OTA-11 I didnt
experience the issue, but I didnt receive many SMS messages since OTA-11
so it may not mean anything, as most people send me a Telegram message.
I will monitor the situation further.

Then probably I just didnt encounter it yet, strange that all other
sounds continue working normally but SMS does not. I hope developers

Seems to me like that audio role's volume is getting set to 0%. If I
remember right, SMS alerts and the screenshot sound both use the same
audio role. One way to check this is to watch the media-hub log from a
shell by doing "tail -f /home/phablet/.cache/upstart/media-hub.log"
You'll be looking for a line that details the audio role and match the
filename to the one you're expecting (SMS being one, screenshot sound
being another). If you then validate that they're listed as the same
roles that will be a first step. Next step would be to try other things
that might be the same role type and verify again in the media-hub.log
that they are the same role. Lastly, begin to verify that only this
audio role type sounds are the ones that aren't playing.

** Description changed:

I noticed for last 2-3 days there is no sound notification for a new
SMS, but there's a blinking green LED notification. Also in the
indicator menu the envelope icon turns green and the new SMS is listed
as usual. Things are working alright for Telegram, Gmail etc.
(sound+LED+indicator menu).

Device: bq Aquaris E5 HD, Ubuntu 15.04 (OTA-9)

+ UPDATE: Screenshots get silent too.

@Jim Stupid question: can this be possibly related to the memory-leak(?)
issue? Last few times I noticed that when this silent SMS issue
occurred, the issue of frequent blank screens in web renderers (e.g.
facebook app shows the message: "Oops, something went wrong." and asks
to reload all the time) started to show up simultaneously. Both the
issues go away after a reboot.

see a direct correlation here between running out of memory and losing

I don't have sound notification on new SMS at the moment on my Nexus 4.
It was working properly before (before OTA-11 ?). From parameters it
should sound and vibrate, none is done. And I am not in silent mode.

Hi Bogdan! I'm the same opinion as You but even if this bug is fixed, the problem doesn't disappear because of another bug i reported here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-ux/+bug/1579570

Until the bug 1579570 hangs over our heads (and it doesn't even have an
importance set) it is all the same if the phone tries to ring or not
cause we hardly hear it anyway. Join the bug report 1579570 if You think
it makes sense and I think it is perhaps not technically but a bigger
problem.

@Anupam: can you try doing the top portion of comment #5 where you try
and turn up the volume. Like Pat said this can be tricky, but see if
you're able to do that. This will help confirm if it's indeed a volume
issue or some other PulseAudio configuration issue.

This is most likely a symptom of bug #1506953 (mediahub crashes) or bug
#1596329 (mediahub hangs). It can be recreated by killing the media-hub-
server process, in most cases neither SMS or screenshot sounds are
played.

Sorry Anupam : I did not want to pollute this complex bug-id
but I wished to point out that the problem may be an
interaction between several applications that use the system
sound notifications. I believe it...
I decided to create notifications at the same time for
several applications (sms/calendar/and clock alarm)
at 19:30 every day...
Soon, the sound becomes mute after first notification...

I did not reproduce this problem yet.

But according to the comment #48, when problem happens, neither sound
notification nor vibration work. So it does not look like a pulseaudio
problem since the vibration does not work too.

When problem happens, to check if media-hub-server sends playing request
to pulseaudio or not, we can do test as below:

1) Problem happens

2) Use adb shell to connect the phone with computer

3) set environment variable according to /usr/share/upstart/sessions/pulseaudio.conf
e.g.:
$export PULSE_SCRIPT=/etc/pulse/touch.pa
$export PULSE_CLIENTCONFIG=/etc/pulse/touch-client.conf
$export PULSE_PROP='media.role=multimedia'
$export PULSE_PLAYBACK_CORK_STALLED=1

4) $pulseaudio --kill && pulseaudio --start -vvvv --log-
target=file:/tmp/a.txt

5) check /tmp/a.txt, make sure the pulseaudio starts successfully

6) $cp /tmp/a.txt /tmp/before-sms.txt

7) send a text message to your phone, trigger a sms event

8) $cp /tmp/b.txt /tmp/after-sms.txt

9) comparing before-sms.txt and after-sms.txt (or upload them to LP)

If this problem does not happen, the diff should be like the attached file, we can see the media-hub-server really sent playing request to pulseaudio when receiving text message.

@hui.wang: When it's happened to me vibration still does work but I just
don't hear any notification sound. I'll run through those steps that you
listed above the next time it happens.

Recently I was taking some photos with my BQ E5.
On the first couple of photos I did get the normal shutter sound.
After I think maybe 3 or 4 photos there was no shutter sound any more.
I am not sure if this goes along with loosing the sound on incoming SMS.

BUT I did find that - at least at this last occasion - loosing the shutter sound did go along with a sudden akku drainage. I did experience this akku drainage before (see screenshots), but this time I could tell when it started.
Maybe that helps. If you do need any logs let me know.

@jim that kinda sounds like media-hub or some service got into a loop
would be interesting to run top command when tat happens, we could check the media-hub log also.

@Pat: Tough to say, I've only had this happen to me once myself and it
didn't seem like media-hub as I was still able to play music and do
other things with media-hub. My theory is still that the volume for the
particular audio role is getting set to a very low volume.

Hello, I proposed a merge in indicator-sound (lp:~d.filoni/indicator-
sound/pulse_fix_set_volume_role) that could fix this however I'm not
sure the issue is the same.

@Anupam and anyone else affected:

1 - is there any chance volume buttons get pressed accidentally while phone is in your pocket? Alert role volume is changed also when phone is locked.
2 - can you describe volume icon at the top of the screen when you miss a notification? Is it mute? Does it show two gray waves?
3 - do you often play music on phone or video content?
4 - could you try (close all apps before this) to adjust volume after typing a number in dialer-app? You should hear a sound when typing a digit (dialer keypad tones should be enabled in sound settings), maybe you'll hear the sound only after you increase the volume. This should adjust alert role (used by sms) volume and as result fix the issue (without having to remove /home/phablet/.config/pulse/ubuntu-phablet-stream-volumes.tdb file). This test could also confirm Jim's theory about a roles issue.

Thank you

well. We really need to figure out how to reliably reproduce this issue

@Devid Thanks for your suggestions. To answer your queries:
1. I don't think so.
2. If I remember correctly, the sound icon doesn't change. I'll check again.
3. No, I seldom play music and videos on the phone.
4. I'll check this once the issue reappears. I already tried the top portion of comment #5 (try to turn up the volume as soon as an SMS arrives), but didn't seem helpful. It only changed the speaker volume which was already high.

@Anupam: interesting, once the issue reappears could you also try to post the output of the command (as user) 'pactl list sink-inputs':
- as soon as you unlock the phone
- as soon as you type few digits in dialer-app (step 4 of my previous comment)
This could tell us if the issue is about roles switch (maybe the muted feedbacksound role gets wrongly used, it should be active only when not-playing audio)

3 (again) - Do you play any mobile game (or any other app installed from
store which uses audio)? (sorry, I forgot to mention this in my original
question). An app using multimedia role constantly in background could
cause the issue I found in indicator-sound.

I have same problem on OTA-12, BQ E5.

Attaching tailed unity8 and syslog.

Note that there are lot's of these lines:

"""
Failed to get current playback position: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod: Method "Get" with signature "ss" on interface "org.freedesktop.DBus.Properties" doesn't exist
"""

...which do disssapear after reboot, and after reboot, sms notification
sound start working again (for some time...).

@Devid The issue reappeared and I tried everything you suggested. Here are the observations/outputs:
- Sound icon doesn't change while receiving an SMS
- I tried step 4 of your original suggestion (adjust volume after typing a number in dialer-app). While typing numbers dialer-app produced dialpad-tone as usual. But pressing volume buttons after that only changed the "speaker volume" which was already high.
- I seldom use apps which use audio.
- Output of 'pactl list sink-inputs' are attached herewith.

@Vincas: your issue looks similar to bug #1506953 (fixed in OTA-13) so
looks like media-hub is crashed for you, do you have any crash log in
/var/crash?

@Anupam: thank you for your answers, I don't think this is a role volume issue anymore, can you check if you have the same "Failed to get current playback position" error as reported by Vincas in your ~/.cache/upstart/unity8.log file?
Another question: after step 4 of my original suggestion, have you tried if incoming SMS were working again?

This bug came to me back today so I can help now as well.

@Devid: I do not see any "Failed to get current playback position" in my
logs.

And Your last question: the one and >only< way I found to get sms sounds
back is to reboot the phone. And there is many things like this that
cease to function unless we reboot. That's what I noticed in case of
screen rotation and music player: the longer we hear+use other
function/apps the sooner a Music Player will crash (like here: Bug
#1611249).
SMS notifications seem to go off always after some >count< of
received messages<<< (or after uptime but I can't confirm-I receive to
many messages)

I noticed no other influence. It has nothing to do with games/Music
players etc. but rather if with anything than with memory consumption
(is there no system monitor for this phone?) I think the Bug #1611249 is
pretty interesting that at first we are unable to launch any app and
then suddenly after some time notification area repairs, Music player
starts somehow if it doesn't have to load a playlist (when we open a
file with the app, not start the app itself cause then it crashes). When
my music player crashes, for some time I'm unable to open any app in the
system. I have to wait a few minutes or reboot. Sms issue is quite
opposite: it never started to play sounds again.

Ps.
Sorry that path with a memory was wrong. I just reminded myself that as I was unable to start any app, I still got a sound notification with a message. The uptime of the phone was however big. So it has rather more to do with an amount of the messages we already received. After some certain count, perhaps by some certain unknown conditions, something goes always wrong.

I have tested the screenshot case in turbo, where I heard no sound, and
in frieza, where sound is working (see attached logs). In turbo I saw in
unity8.log:

[2016-08-16:15:21:08.524] [PERFORMANCE]: Last frame took 32 ms to render.
[2016-08-16:15:21:09.087] virtual void AalMediaPlayerControl::stop()

While in frieza we have:

[2016-08-16:15:46:01.447] virtual void AalMediaPlayerControl::play()
[2016-08-16:15:46:01.447] void AalMediaPlayerService::play()

It seems that unity8 is doing something weird here, as it is stopping audio before it has called the "play" method in turbo. Looking at media-hub log, the stop command is received, but there is no play command.

I have been trying to reproduce the bug in most of the devices in
different ways (screenshot, sms, telegram), but no luck.

@all, is there anybody still experiencing this in OTA-12? If that is the
case, and you can reproduce easily, please do in your phone:

rm ~/.cache/upstart/*
sudo sh -c '> /var/log/syslog'

-> reproduce now the bug. Then gather the logs with

tar cvzf log.tar.gz ~/.cache/upstart/* /var/log/syslog

and upload log.tar.gz to launchpad.

Just to let you know I've not experienced this bug in OTA-12 yet. In
OTA-11 it happened very often.

It's possible that a fix that I landed in OTA-12 that took care of a
nasty thread deadlock issue took care of this issue, or at least once
trigger of it.

Marked this bug as incomplete. If anybody sees this issue with OTA-12
and can reliably reproduce the issue, we'll reopen this bug.

It is still broken on my BQ E4.5 with OTA-12 but I don't know how to
make it break.
The only reliable sms sound alert is the first one after a restart so if
I think I am going to get more sms I need to know about I now restart
phone after receiving each one.

I'm having this issue as frequently as before even after OTA-12, but I
couldn't find steps to reproduce the issue reliably. What happens is
usually after 1-2 days after a reboot, this issue appears out of
nowhere. Also deleting ubuntu-phablet-stream-volumes.tdb file is
redundant, a reboot only makes things normal again.

@John, @Anupam: could you try to follow steps described by Alfonso in
comment #82? I would also try to enable pulseaudio logging.

How to enable pulseaudio logging (looks like wiki instructions don't work for Ubuntu Touch, IIRC these are the right steps):
- set device to writable mode
As root:
- create backup file: cp /usr/share/upstart/sessions/pulseaudio.conf /usr/share/upstart/sessions/pulseaudio.conf.bkp
- edit in file /usr/share/upstart/sessions/pulseaudio.conf
line:
exec pulseaudio --start
to:
exec pulseaudio -vvvv --start --log-target=newfile:/tmp/pulseverbose.log --log-time=1
- restart device

Please do not restart your phone after you reproduce the issue or log
files will be lost (copy them in another directory first so you can
upload them later)

(from wiki) The log files are in the /tmp directory. You might see more
than one file (pulseverbose.log, pulseverbose.log.1, pulseverbose.log.2,
etc). In case you don't know which file is the right one, please attach
all files to the launchpad bug.

I'd like to help but I really don't know anything about delving into the
phone software at present I am just using it as a phone with browser
access.

I have not dared set it to writeable mode (which I assume is Developer
Mode) I don't know how to access root on it, also the chances of me
typing those strings accurately on the touch keyboard are not high. Or
can I access it via my computer if I go to Developer Mode? I can't see
the directories you mention. Wrong place for these questions. Is there
an idiots guide somewhere?

@Michal: can you reproduce it reliably? What were you doing when you
noticed it wasn't working? Are Telegram notifications working for you
right now? How about alarms in the clock app? Can you play music from
the music-app?

I've noticed the green led when I took the phone out of my pocket. I didn't hear the sound but wasn't sure if that's due to the bug or because I was in noisy surroundings. I asked someone to send me a message to check if this is due to the bug and the message arrived without the sound notification.
Few hours before I was listening to a podcast using Podbird app. Not sure if that could be related as I every day without issues since OTA-12.

Telegram notifications work fine with the sound. Music app plays songs
fine. I can hear alarms in the clock app too. Screenshots, on the other
hand, _do not_ make a sound.
